Despite the name, English Breakfast is said to have been born in Scotland or the United States in the 1800s, and it became “English” when Queen Victoria brought it to London from Balmoral Castle. The habit of milk in tea has a practical explanation: the first European porcelain cups cracked with boiling water, and pouring the milk in first protected them.
